Just to add my cents here. There's really no end all be all setup. Ben's suggestion of the KYMA system is as close as you will get to an all encompassing synth/harddisk recorder/mixer/FX/kitchen sink system, but also like he mentioned they start around 4k (us) and quickly move up from there. If you did a quick poll of all the musicians on this list you'll find that every single one of them uses something different. Modular soft synths are a cheap great way to start developing sound (Vaz modular, and the native instruments stuff being the 2 most used on the PC), but you will hit road blocks, mainly DSP and controller issues. In the end there's really nothing better than getting a pretty comprehensive hardware synth and learning as much as you can about it. Im not talking rompler's here but something a bit more editable, along the lines of the kurzweil samplers (K2k series) or a Nord Modular. For cheaper you may wish to look at things like the Kawai K5000s, which is an additive synth, or some of the later Yamaha FM synths (the SY77 or 99). The beauty of having outboard gear is that its made from the ground up to do its one thing, it has controllers for that thing and you'll never have to deal with crashes or out of memory errors or latency issue cuz you dont have the latest super computer. Basically my suggestion to you is to look around find a cheap synth that has some editing (any old sampler is a great place to start) and make it do what you want. m. -----Original Message----- From: b. sims [mailto:sunshine@halcyon.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 14, 1999 1:07 PM To: atomly Cc: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (idm) gear

as far as pure softsynths, reaktor (aka generator plus transformator) from native instruments (www.native-instruments.com) is a top notch program from what i've seen. as far the best dsp or sound creation tool, i personally find the kyma system from symbolic sound (www.symbolicsound.com) the most open ended and powerful sound design tool built. it is pricy but not really when on considers what it can do. sure to cure one's gas (gear acquisition syndrome.) however, it is not for the weak of heart or anyone who doesn't like building sounds from the ground up. examples of kyma can be heard in the matrix, the wind in a thin red line, and the thx surround sound trailer. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
